When I was a child in summer camp in the ‘50s, we went on hikes in the Adirondacks. Each little girl carried an empty canteen. When we got thirsty, we filled our canteens from the creek without a thought of toxins in the water.

Hello, I am from Hawaii and living in Berlin, Germany. They are very proud of the quality of their tap water here, and I spend weekends out at the water source the city uses. They keep wide areas around the "Havel" (kind of a big lake) as non-development areas. It seems to work rather well.
I remember reading science fiction as a kid and reading stories of folks living in a world where due to the environment, drinking bottled water was required for health safety. I remember thinking how weird is that--can't imagine that ever happening. Welcome to the future.
